PE17 Maximize Energy Recovery and Process Heat Integration by Pinch Analysis

With the rising cost of utilities, energy efficiency has become key in the drive to reduce a plant’s production costs and cut down on its waste treatment bills. Standard measures such as good housekeeping, frequent preventive maintenance, and improved utility systems are implemented by most companies, but may only achieve minimal energy savings. Is there other energy saving measures that could be taken to provide a clear competitive advantage? This course introduces the basics of process integration and pinch analysis – a systematic procedure for the design and improvement of process systems for optimum energy usage and minimum waste generation. It will enable participants to assess the energy efficiency of their plant and identify measures that could reduce their plant’s energy consumption and CO2 emission without adversely affecting its structure.

Target Group

Engineers e.g. chemical engineers and mechanical engineers, process design engineers, process engineers, engineering company engineers, any technical people dealing with utility, energy optimization and cost reduction. This course is suitable for professionals who are responsible for improving plant energy efficiency, reducing utility costs, and designing or retrofitting heat exchanger networks (HEN).

IV. Targeting concept of pinch analysis – identification of minimum hot and cold utility targets for process plants
• Data Extraction: Practical Techniques
• Graphical targeting using heat transfer composite curve
• Algebraic technique using Problem Table Algorithm
• Utility selection at targeting stage

V. Heat exchanger network (HEN) design and optimisation
• The use of Pinch Design Method for HEN design
• Retrofit of HEN
• Combined heat and power

VI. Hands-on workshops using various literature and industrial examples
