PE30: Pressure Relief System Design and Engineering

This comprehensive 2-day course is designed to provide process engineers with in-depth knowledge and practical applications of pressure relief system design. Participants will learn about the fundamental principles of safety relief valves, overpressure protection philosophy, load determination, flare system sizing, and relief load mitigation. Through case studies and real-world examples, attendees will gain hands-on experience in analyzing pressure relief scenarios and implementing effective protection strategies.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of safety relief valves, including types, applications, and sizing.
  • Analyze overpressure protection philosophies, including administrative controls, instrument response, and operator error considerations.
  • Identify and assess various overpressure scenarios, such as fire, blocked outlets, thermal expansion, control valve failure, and reaction runaway.
  • Learn vapor depressurization techniques to ensure safe plant operations.
  • Determine overall relief loads in cases such as fire, electrical failure, and cooling system failure.
  • Gain insights into flare system sizing and design, covering PSV piping, flare stacks, KO drums, and purging requirements.
  • Explore relief load mitigation strategies, including the application of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and High-Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPP)
